Green PC - Environment Friendly Computer

Green PC:

Computers go green

This is a Group of Students of Computer Science in URBE, Rafael Belloso Chacín University.

This page is oriented to find how can we help with informatics and computers technologies to find a solution
to this big enviromental problem. We will see how small problems can turn into a really big problems for the
Environment.
We will provide some solutions and tips on how can everybody help to the conservation of our planet

2. The Problem
The problem is the Global warming caused by emissions of carbon dioxide, which trap heat so it can't escape the atmosphere. Although cars, factories and power plants do most of the damage, the computer is at least partly to blame. A PC uses 200 to 400 watts, depending on its configuration and use. By comparison, a refrigerator uses about 725 watts, but a DVD player uses only 25 watts, and your TV is right around 100 watts. A high-performance gaming rig with a powerful graphics card, multiple hard drives and optical drives, a flash memory reader, and a 30-inch LCD might consume as much as 750 watts.

According to support.com, it is estimated that activating power management functions on your desktop computer can result in saving up to $75 per year and over 11 million pounds of CO2 emissions. The equivalent to planting more than 1000 acres of trees, burning more than 13,000 barrels of oil and saving more emissions than 5000 cars driving from NY to LA.

3. Methodology
Our mission can be archived by making deals with most popular websites on internet to lend some space to show the advertizements, with a maximum size of 500x500 pixels. Some of them could be: Google, eBay, Amazon, Cnet, IGN, CNN, NBC, and other news and technology websites.
And some national websites like: URBE, LUZ, MercadoLibre, Globovision, Venevision, RCTV, Noticias24, and others.

Also, we could work with social networks like myspace, facebook, hi5 and others, to show advertizements every 10 or 20 clicks on links inside the website, and showing an adverticement on the 'Home' screen of the users.

4. Our Engineering Solution
Create a digital campaign to adverticements that help people realize the kind of damage they do unintentionally to the enviroment, and giving quick and easy steps that they can do for energy saving or power management, that will make a huge impact to solving global warming.

Some of the tips are :

1. Turn your computer off completely when you know you will not be using it for several hours, such as overnight.
2. Save energy when your computer is not shut down completely by setting the power management into “sleep” mode after a certain amount of non-use, or setting the power management to turn off your screen or harddrives after some time.
3. Increase your memory (RAM) to reduce disk usage.
4. Upgrade to an LCD flat panel monitor instead of a CRT monitor.

The companies that help us with this campaign by showing the Ads and following the steps that we provide them, will earn a badge that they can show on their webpage with the words "Transfer the Green", that eventually will become a known or recognized symbol of enviromental help.
